The Big PSTN Switch-Off: Is Your Alarm/Fire System Ready?

What the 2025 digital phone line switchover means for your security setup — and how Anglia Electrical & Security can help.

What’s Happening?

The UK’s analogue telephone network (PSTN) is being phased out by Openreach, with full switch-off for monitored lines expected by August 2025. This includes ISDN and copper-based phone lines. All voice and data services are moving to digital-only (VoIP) systems. This shift is part of a nationwide digital infrastructure upgrade to improve reliability and service quality.

Why Does This Matter?

If your fire or intruder alarm system still relies on a traditional phone line for monitoring and alerts, it may stop functioning once PSTN is turned off. This could mean your alarm can no longer communicate with our Alarm Receiving Centre, leaving your premises unprotected.

Impacted systems may include:

  • Intruder Alarms
  • Fire Alarm Systems
  • CCTV with dial-out functions
  • Emergency and panic alarms
  • Lift lines and EPOS systems

How We’re Helping

Anglia Electrical & Security Ltd is actively contacting all customers who may be affected. We offer upgrades to IP and GSM-enabled devices such as the CSL DualCom, which uses both IP and 4G WorldSIM technology to ensure dual-path, resilient signalling even if one network path fails.

What You Should Do

We recommend the following steps to ensure your security and compliance:

✅  Check if your current system uses a traditional phone line

✅  Book an appointment with us to review your setup

✅  Upgrade to a digital-ready solution such as DualCom or WorldSIM-compatible device

✅  Speak to your insurer to confirm any compliance requirements

Housekeeping Tips

While reviewing your system, we also suggest you:

  • Test your signalling regularly and report any faults
  • Inform us of any site specific changes
  • Review your keyholder list and ensure it is up to date
